Here’s another set of photos taken around Brixton ten years ago during December 2004.
Above you can see a trader wedged into a little segment of an arch on Atlantic Road, selling International Calling Cards, offering an intriguing ‘Spacial offer’!
Xmas tree advert on Coldharbour Lane.
To the right you can see a lorry parked outside the Walton Lodge – a laundry business that had traded in the same place for over 120 years before closing in June this year. It was sad to see such a Brixton institution going.
Electric Avenue street market scene.
The Actionettes performing at the How Does It Feel To Be Loved club night at the Canterbury Arms, Pope’s Road, Brixton.
In the background you can see the fantastic (but now vanished) bas relief skyscraper artwork, while behind the dancers were fairground mirrors.
The crowd applaud the dancers.
Tragically, the Canterbury is set to be demolished in the new year to make way for yet another social housing-free upmarket development.
Valentia Place, before the private Viaduct housing development was (eventually) built.
In the distance you can see the iconic Barrier Block.
Christmas trees outside Brixton Village.
For a short while, there was a Trinidadian restaurant on the first floor of the Dogstar.
Offline club night at the Dogstar, which we ran on two (and sometimes three) floors.
The club is still going strong – it’s now held at the Prince Albert down the road – although a very intriguing event at the Dogstar is planned for the new year.
Two Offline regulars.
The Pogues playing a Christmas concert at the Academy.
Finally, here’s the scene as the New Year chimed in at the Windmill pub in Brixton.
